CD Review - Mayer Hawthorne - "A Strange Arrangement"
Okay so, this is a blog about music, so it's only fitting that I also review music on this blog; not just feed you new songs. This way, maybe you'll branch out and find new music that you love. Plus, we all know you're wondering about certain cds and how they sound, you just don't want to waste the money. Well, dont worry I'LL waste that money for you.
For my first review, I want to review a CD called "A Strange Arrangement" by Mayer Hawthorne. It was released this past fall, but got little to no recognition.
I first heard Mayer Hawthorne on Kanye's blog when I saw a video for his single "Maybe So, Maybe No". I was immediately drawn in by the catchy hook that the song opens up with and the smooth beat that Mayer Hawthorne sings over. It wasn't much, but it was enough for me to decide to look into the purchasing the whole cd. What I found really just knocked my socks off.
The CD opens with a short prelude, followed the album's title track "A Strange Arrangement". It's a very slow, slightly sad love song that takes a bit to get through, but I promise you, it's worth it. The cd that follows is completely different. Songs like "The Ills" and "Your Easy Lovin' Ain't Pleasin' Mothin'" make you want to get up and dance by utilizing horns to the fullest, while "I Wish It Would Rain" is a strikingly honest love song about a lost love, and not wanting to appear like you're hurting as much as you really are without that love in your life. "Make Her Mine" and "One Track Mind" are both songs about Mayer Hawthorne loving his girl despite any issues or difficulties they may face.
This entire cd seems to be straight out of a time-warp. It has a feel like it's from the 50's or 60's or something; very retro. But don't let that deter you. This CD has something for everyone. His honesty is something that can touch anyone and it's shocking and refreshing to hear an atist like Mayer Hawthorne. Someone who isnt afraid to take a sound or an "image" that may not be totally prevelant but completely rock it to the fullest. I highly reccomend "A Strange Arrangement" by Mayer Hawthorne to anyone and everyone, because I KNOW that they will find and fall in love with at least one track off of this rad CD.
